NOVEMBER 19, 2006
"Man in Brass" for brass quintet performed by:
Wayne Bennett, trumpet
Zachary Newman, trumpet
Tara Cates, french horn
Paul Pietrowski, trombone
Brent Harvey, tuba
Seth Colaner, conductor
The music in this piece was inspired by the melodies of some of Johnny Cash’s most popular songs. The variation, expansion, contraction, elaboration, destruction, and restoration of the music is symbolic of the sometimes turbulent, sometimes peaceful, always rich life of the late great Man in Black.
I believe that God gives different gifts, talents, and abilities to all people. In return, we are asked to embrace what we have and to develop those qualities to their fullest. Being redeemed means being given the responsibility and the power to reflect God’s excellence in all things.
Seth Colaner (b.1982), an Ohio native, has studied composition with Donald Busarow and Steven Winteregg, and he currently studies with Mark Engebretson. Seth’s music includes works for voice, mixed ensembles, solo instruments, brass quintet, string quartet, electronic media, orchestra, and opera, and incidental music for the stage. His music is inspired by humanity in all its pain, glory, filth, and beauty. He is influenced as much by Copland, Stravinsky, and Crumb as he is by Kurt Cobain, radiohead, and Johnny Cash. Compositionally, his interests tend to focus on vocal music and works for the stage, particularly opera. Current projects include a workshop of his opera "He Cried Uncle" at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro as well as commissions for vocal works, dance, and for tuba.
